Head of Research on Human Sciences

The humanities research department was established in September 2018 for the purpose to research on humanities. Ghalib University offers degree programs in business administration, law and political science, therefore the research department is focused on studies relevant to these study programs. However, the department in collaboration with other researchers tries to conduct research on other areas relevant to humanities. In the first place, it is important to define what a research is:

Research is an important indicator demonstrating the role and responsibility of the universities in producing knowledge. Research is one key way to promote sustainable development in a country.

Research is also defined as "a systematic activity that addresses at a particular problem and tries to find a solution for it"; if we accept such a definition, through research we can define many of the country’s issues in this context. A research has three key steps: a question/problem to be addressed, collecting data and information, and providing answers for the mentioned question using the collected data. Answer to the question using an appropriate methodology leads to generating a theory and it is able to provide explanations regarding predications related to the problem. The theory can generate knowledge and understanding and describes phenomena related to the problem.

A set of identical theories that belong to a particular field of study lead to generation of knowledge. Science is all about experiment. Knowledge is produced in an indestructible manner and similar to a forest it spreads all over. One can categorize science based on different criteria. In humanities, human is the key object of study. Humanities is a set of discipline that focus on teachings that lead to understanding on how human beings look at things. It is noteworthy to mention that similar to other sciences, humanities are also empirical and experimental.

Science or knowledge production takes place in a philosophical perspective. In other words, every research is set in a specific paradigm, and every paradigm has its own ontology, epistemology and methodology. It is like the researcher puts on glasses and sees the object in a particular color.

Research has seven paradigms that includes positivism, interpretive, critical theory, feminism, chaos theory, complexity theory and postmodernism. Each of these paradigms is built up on a specific philosophical foundation. The orientation of each of these paradigms can be based on ontology, epistemology, methodological, rhetorical and axiological.

Such approaches to research is oriented towards inductive, deductive or both reasoning. The methods of the research based on the above four approaches can be quantitative, qualitative or a mixture of both. Research method is either desk research, field studies and or experimental. Each of these approaches are based on a particular strategic framework. Strategies for quantitative research are experimental, correlational and measurement. Grounded theory, ethnography, and historical research are qualitative strategy. Action research, case studies and other mixed researches are part of mixed research methods. Data collection methods include through questionnaires, observation, interviews, and evidence.

Before a research is conducted, researcher thinks about thinks about a question or a problem for which he/she wants to answer through an appropriate methodology. Therefore, what a researcher tend to know is the difference between a question and a problem. A problem for the common people is a general, superficial and ambiguous thing, while a problem for a researcher is something clear that he/she can investigate about it.

A problem arises to the research when he/she has conducted a literature review in their field of expertise. The question symbolizes of unknown. In the next stem, the researcher attempts to identify hypotheses which helps him identify and select what paradigms to use for his/her research. It is only then when the researcher forms the next steps for his/her research and based on the onion research approach the researcher continues to conduct the research and attempt to find an answer for the problem.
